I was absolutely flummoxed when I realized the Making Strides event was the same weekend as the 3 Day. I hadn't even considered the media conflicts (although, in my experience, almost all of the news outlets cover the 3 Day on Day 1 only). You are absolutely right - SGK needs to fight for the recognition of their walkers.

In part, I suspect this is due to three things:

1, Unlike the Race for the Cure event (which gets A LOT of coverage and which is organized and run by the local Komen affiliate), the 3 Day is run by the national HQ of Komen. That said, they don't have the people on the ground in their event cities to get the word out in a big way. Why the local affiliates don't help more, I couldn't say. This is just my observation.

2, Supporting/covering an event for the American Cancer Society is actually less controversial than covering an SGK event. Because a lot of SGK outreach money goes to "women's health" programs and organizations, there is a rather loud and utterly incorrect rumor that SGK is funding abortions. This is a total load of bull pucky, but it is definitely out there. American Cancer Society doesn't have that stigma, making it less controversial to be associated with.

and finally, ACS is HQd here in Atlanta, unlike Komen which is HQd in Dallas. That in and of itself is going to get bigger coverage for the ACS events.

Regardless, I'm proud of you for standing up for 3 Day walkers every where! This is a fight worth fighting, I think.

~ KristenKristen Sager Cincottahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12706301239720795247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653719568736797428.post-70308898046269397162010-09-28T09:01:23.932-07:002010-09-28T09:01:23.932-07:00Sara - Thank you for your thoughts and comments. I am forwarding this to all media - newspapers, radio, television, facebook, etc. I am also asking EVERYONE to please share with your friends, your neighbors, and your news, even if you aren't local! I want to show the power the 3-Day has!!! There are so many wonderful people out there working their butts off (quite literally in some cases) to participate in this event and they deserve some recognition! Spread the word!!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06199639139302775031noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8653719568736797428.post-72920009685814055732010-09-28T05:05:08.455-07:002010-09-28T05:05:08.455-07:00Hi Deanna-

When I participated in the 3 Day a few years back, all of the local stations covered the 3 Day at somepoint, but I was surprised that they would be considered a sponsor for 2 events the same weekend. Have you contacted the station directly via e-mail or a phone call. Forwarding this blog post onto the news anchors directly may not change the station's plans for the weekend, but it will get your voice heard and possibly responded to. Just a thought. Keep up the great work. I know it's hard, but it is also so very worth it and will impact the hundreds of thousands of lives.Sara Satinsky Hanainoreply@blogger.com
